Peschiera and Reineke win ICSA Singlehanded Championships, presented by Laser Performance

#2 College of Charleston’s senior and ICSA College Sailor of the Year frontrunner, Stefano Peschiera won the Laser Performance Men's Singlehanded Nationals in impressive fashion. A regatta, stacked with talent, showcased three previous champions, including Peschiera himself, who won the event as a freshman in 2014. Posting a scoreline with one race outside the top-7 positions, Peschiera walked away from the competition regardless of its strength. Mr. Peschiera finished with 50 points after 12 races, including 5 races inside the top-3. With only the Atlantic Coast Championship left to sail, Peschiera has put together a compelling campaign, winning his conference championship, A-Division at the Danmark Trophy and now the Singlehanded Nationals.

Gerald Williams ‘19 of Charleston finished second at the event with 64 points, 14 points behind the lead. Teammate and training partner to Peschiera, Williams put together an extremely impressive regatta in his own right, stringing together nothing but top-10’s after a slow first four races. Williams had 6 top-3 finishes, more than his fellow Cougar. The competition finished right on William’s back and going into the final race of the regatta, Williams jumped from 5th to the second overall position with a 2nd place finish in the final race of the regatta.

#15 Navy’s senior Gary Prieto finished 3rd overall with 65 points. Jacksonville’s Gage Wilson ‘21 finished 4th with 67, winning a tiebreaker against last year’s champion, Scott Rasmussen ‘20 of #13 Boston College. Wilson’s 3 first place finishes at the event gave him the nod in the tiebreaker against Rasmussen.

#3 Boston College’s Freshman, Sophia Reineke won the Laser Performance Women's Singlehanded Nationals narrowly. In a regatta that came down to the last race, Reineke finished the day of racing tied for first, losing the tiebreaker, and advanced solely into first after Carly Broussard ‘21 of #8 Georgetown was disqualified, a result that bumped Reineke up 1 point. Every competitor had at least one race of ten points or more, a testament to the parity and toughness of the event. Ms. Reineke’s bad race, a 16,  came early and set the young freshman behind the eight ball to start the regatta. However, Reineke was not deterred and put together nothing but top-7’s in the last 8 races to finish the event.

Going into the last race, Reineke stood 11 points behind #2 Coast Guard senior, Dana Rohde. Rohde strung together a 6-race stretch in the middle of the event, totaling 17 points- an impressive series that extended her lead to 12 points going into the final 2 races. Rohde left the door open, finishing the regatta with an 18 and a steadfast Reineke was able to capitalize. Despite the heartbreaking finish for the senior, Rohde finished second overall with 69 points- 2 points ahead of Kelly-Ann Arrindell ‘20 of #6 Charleston.

Lindsey Baab ‘18 (#5 Brown) finished 4th with 75 points and Marian Frances Williams ‘21 of Charleston finished 5th with 76 points in what was an extremely tight regatta.
