Challenging Conditions and Close Competition Marked a Thrilling Weekend of Racing

After two days of close competition in a tight fleet Ava Anderson, ‘27 of Tulane University and Nicholas Reeser ‘25 from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy are the 2023  Women’s and Open Singlehanded National Champions.

Athletes in both regattas were greeted Saturday on Lake Pontchartrain with overcast skies, 6-9 knots of breeze from the Northeast and a steady chop that had built overnight. The skill levels of the Women’s and Open fleets were readily apparent to coaches and spectators in the close results.

A full weekend of blustery westerly breeze on the Severn River greeted sailors to the 2023 Atlantic Coast Tournament where the University of Miami Hurricanes surged on Sunday morning with low scores to overcome four MAISA and PCCSC teams to secure first place for the overall regatta. Congratulations to Atlee Kohl (Jr., St. Croix, USVI), Natalie Elder (Jr., Newton, MA), Magnus Weissenberger (Jr., Villanova, PA), Aiden Dennis (Jr., Kemah, TX), Ana Stewart (Fr., Minnetonka, MN), and Dom Canonico (Sr., Tampa, FL) for winning the ACT and earning SAISA Open Sailors of the Week for Week 6, Fall 2023.

Facing fierce competition at the 2023 Yale Women's Regatta, the College of Charleston Women stepped up to the task as the Cougars' A-Division finished six of the twelve races on the podium against the deepest women's field in the country, completing the event in fourth overall after losing a tiebreak. Sailing A-Division for the 7th ranked College of Charleston was skipper Emma Tallman (Sr., Torrance, CA), Clara Murphy (Fr., Norfolk, VA), and Rowan Schanley (Sr., Manchester, MA), earning SAISA Women's Sailors of the Week for Week 6, Fall 2023.

St. Mary's City, MD (Oct. 23, 2023) – Harvard University took the win at the 2023 Open Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC) Finals hosted by the St. Mary’s College of Maryland after two days of competitive racing on the St. Mary’s River. The Open Atlantic Coast Championship was the second event of a two stage series which began with two evenly seeded events hosted by NEISA. The top nine teams from each qualifying regatta moved on to the finals. The Open ACC Finals is the strongest open fleet racing event of the season, and saw very competitive and tight racing. The podium was swept by the Ivy League with Brown University and Dartmouth College rounding out the top three.

“I am very proud of our team. Everyone has worked hard to get us to this point,” said Harvard University Head Coach Mike O’Connor. “Over the last few weeks we have focused on consistently starting well. We knew that there would be little margin for error against the best teams in the nation.”
